Amethyst: February’s Birthstone
If you were born in February, your beautiful birthstone is amethyst. A purple variety of quartz, amethyst can range from light lilac to deep purple. Today we’ll share some interesting amethyst facts, how to care for this gemstone, and show you a few of our favorite pieces in every budget range!
A Royal Favorite
If you checked the jewelry and gem collections of kings and queens—even those who reigned thousands of years ago—you’d find amethyst. The deep purple variety was a particular favorite, because it was believed to give the wearer strength and a clear head—important qualities for any leader to possess.
Interestingly, amethyst got its name from the Greek word “amethystos,” which means “a remedy against drunkenness.” The ancient Greeks associated amethyst’s purple color with wine—and thus with the god Bacchus—and believed that drinking from an amethyst-adorned goblet would protect them from intoxication!
They may not have been right about that, but amethyst’s allure has remained unchanged throughout the centuries. In addition to being February’s birthstone, amethyst is also traditionally given as a gift for the sixth and seventeenth wedding anniversaries.
Care & Keeping
If you’re lucky enough to own an amethyst or two, follow these tips to keep it looking as gorgeous as ever.
- Since amethyst is a 7 on the Mohs scale of hardness, it’s tough enough for daily wear in a ring. However, since it’s not quite as tough as rubies or diamonds, you might have to have your amethyst re-polished at some point. For worry-free daily wear, choose amethyst earrings or a pendant!
- For similar reasons, you’ll want to store your amethyst jewelry away from any stone above a 7 on the Mohs scale (diamonds, rubies, sapphires, etc.) in order to prevent scratching.
- Likewise, amethyst can scratch any stone below a 7 on the Mohs scale (pearls, opal, etc.), so it’s always best to space your pieces out within a plush jewelry box.
- Extreme exposure to sunlight can cause amethyst to fade dramatically. Normal exposure—like running errands around town or taking a walk in the park—won’t cause any issues, but you wouldn’t want to wear it to the beach or out in the desert sun every day.
- Amethyst is super easy to clean—just use a soft brush with warm, soapy water or use an ultrasonic cleaner—but you’ll want to steer clear of steamers.
